Angkor Wat

Historic Several days difficulty: Moderate with kids: yes
Angkor Wat

The largest temple in the world, the heart of the ancient city of Angkor in the Cambodian jungle, with five pinecone-shaped towers reflected in a pond at dawn. It was built more than 800 years ago by the Khmer empire.

With kids

  • Watch the sunrise with the towers reflected in the pond
  • Look along the walls for the carvings of armies, elephants, and dancers
  • Carefully climb the steep stairs of the towers
  • Count how many stone faces smile in the neighboring temples
Accessibility: All ages; lots of heat and lots of walking — get up early and bring water

With family

  • Tour the different temples of the great Angkor park by tuk-tuk
  • Get up early to avoid the strongest midday heat
  • Discover the giant faces of the Bayon temple, nearby
  • Talk about how the jungle swallowed a whole city
