Art Ludique — Le Musée

Comics & Manga Half day difficulty: Easy with kids: yes
Art Ludique — Le Musée

The museum of entertainment art — comics, manga, animation, film, and video games — born in Paris in 2013, which staged legendary exhibitions: more than 500 works from Pixar (with the Toy Story zoetrope), 1,300 preparatory drawings from Studio Ghibli, Marvel, Aardman, and the art of French video games. Heads up, honesty first: today the museum is itinerant — it left its Les Docks home and its exhibitions travel (right now, «The Art of John Howe: the Worlds of Tolkien»). Before planning, check on artludique.com which city its current exhibition is in.

The pop wink

Here you could see Pixar's Toy Story zoetrope and 1,300 original drawings by Miyazaki and Takahata (Studio Ghibli) — real exhibitions that made history. Its current show travels the worlds of Tolkien with the art of John Howe, the illustrator whose visions shaped The Lord of the Rings films.

With kids

  • Recognize the sketches from films they know by heart
  • Compare the preparatory drawing with the final scene
  • Pick «the drawing I'd take home» from each room
  • Draw their own character on the way out, while the spark is fresh
Accessibility: 6+ — the art they already know, seen from the inside; depends on the exhibition on show

With family

  • The traveling exhibition of the moment (check the city on its website)
  • The family debate: is animated film art? (here you can see the answer)
  • Combine it with the neighborhood of whatever venue it's in
  • The exhibition catalog as the coffee-table book of the year
