Victoria Falls

Waterfall Full day difficulty: Moderate with kids: yes
Victoria Falls

One of the largest waterfalls in the world: the Zambezi River plunges over a crack nearly two kilometers wide, raising a cloud of mist that can be seen from afar. Its local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means «the smoke that thunders», and up close, it soaks and deafens.

With kids

  • Get soaked by the rain that rises from the falls at the viewpoints
  • Look for rainbows (and even moon rainbows on full-moon nights!)
  • Feel the roar of the water and understand why it’s called «the smoke that thunders»
  • Cross the bridge that links Zimbabwe with Zambia over the gorge
Accessibility: All ages; the trails facing the falls get you very wet, bring a raincoat; railings and edges, hold hands; the flow is highest after the rains (April-May)

With family

  • Walk the trails facing the curtain of water amid the mist
  • Take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River looking for elephants
  • See the falls from the air on a scenic flight (optional)
  • Talk about the power of the water and why it is a World Heritage Site
