Nile Cruise, Luxor

Cultural Several days difficulty: Easy with kids: yes
Nile Cruise, Luxor

Sailing the Nile between Luxor and Aswan on a white-sailed felucca or a boat means watching palm trees, villages and thousand-year-old temples drift by from the water. In Luxor, the great temple of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings with its painted tombs await.

The pop wink

This stretch of the Nile is the setting of «Death on the Nile», Agatha Christie's famous mystery novel, brought to the screen several times. Going by boat along the same river, among temples, is stepping right into the story (the plot is for adults, but the trip is for the whole family).

With kids

  • See the giant columns of the temple of Karnak from the deck
  • Wave to the children rowing little boats beside the felucca
  • Look for animal-shaped hieroglyphs on the temple walls
  • Count the white sails of the feluccas crossing the river at sunset
Accessibility: All ages; the boat is comfortable and cool against the heat on land; the tombs have stairs and narrow spaces

With family

  • Sleep on board while the river drifts slowly past the palm groves
  • Go down to the Valley of the Kings to see the brightly painted tombs
  • Watch the golden sunset over the Nile from the boat's deck
  • Chat about the history of Egypt and the mysteries it still hides
